When the rains came, so did his dread; he could recall the sea’s rage as if it struck them only a day or so ago, the anger that drove them from the shore once before. The water levels were rising, threatening them, and yet Aningan did not feel the same fear experienced so many months ago—things were different now, the storms included. But this did not prevent him from leaving, trailing behind those led forward by Erzulie, watchful; none that remained would be left behind, he’d make certain of that.

It would be temporary, he knew, but his sorrow lingered anyways. He would always strive to be near to the sea, despite all it threw at them. Yet, his desires were not what mattered—now it was the safety of the children, of all within his family, that mattered most of all.
