Aside from spouts of greedy table manners, and staunchly warding away any physical contact with his pointy teeth, Leshen remained largely asleep during the first few days of his stay at Kaistleoki. Today, however, he was awake and more alert than before.
He was alone in the Count’s den, presently, and was surprised to feel its emptiness. Surely he didn’t miss those miscreants in his new space. That simply was not possible.
But instead of being able to prove this theory wrong, he got up from where he slept in the corner — as far as possible from the family group — and paced over the cool, smooth area that Ira and her children usually occupied. He sniffed around the shallow bed, and turned a circle once or twice before lying down in that very spot.
His odious eyes watched the empty denmouth, and because he felt he needed to protect this spot, he patiently waited there to see who would return from their morning jaunt first.
