a lone figure draped in warm shades of autumn wove among the tangle, stark against the harsh grey terrain. she wore distress plainly on her face, and every so often lifted her muzzle to call out.
coraline knew her family had been here already, but she could not shake the feeling that mireille would always find her way back to the sea. it was her birthright, as it was coraline's — as with all of erzulie and rosalyn's children. she would come back to the sea. she had to.
but in the meantime, coraline meant to search every inch of the coast for any sign of her sister. her determination was such that when the flash of a stark white pelt winked through the tangle's disarray, she turned toward the sight rather than away. she pursued the figure, even as it bloomed into something large and looming. a man, far larger than most wolves coraline met. a distinct and uncomfortable rigidity took hold of her spine and neck, then, tingling even as she tried to shake the feeling away.
mireille!she cried.
mireille!but her sister did not answer, and no sign nor scent of her appeared.

h-hi,she started, immediately ashamed of her stammering. what would her mothers think? what would mireille think? the sea-girl straightened, and the shyness fled from her demeanor.
my sister, she's lost. i be lookin' for her. have you seen a red girl?
