He wanted her to tell Mahler that Emmerich was one of the finest guardians she had ever seen.

The young man almost shared this news himself, but his father proposed a curious question.

What would Emmerich ask for as a reward?

The boy frowned, a thoughtful expression. He looked down at his white-tipped paws as they walked. Emmerich was not certain he knew what to ask for. He had assumed that his mother and father would have good enough rewards in mind, that they knew what would benefit their home the best.

If they are good, maybe a pack friendship. We can hunt together and help each other if things get scary, Emmerich answered after long consideration.
