he prowled the edges of the valley with discontent in hazel eyes, a shadowy disposition clinging to him like frost on morning grass. speaking of which, frost crunched underfoot as his heavy paws carried him along the border. his mind was heavy with a hungry sense of justice. it wasn’t just about protecting his pack anymore. it wasn’t even about the promotion ameline had dangled before him. this was personal. he had pups on the way, a pregnant wife to protect. for all of tvar's loyalty to bearclaw, he would always put his family first.
he walked and patrolled; one was bound to fall into his paws. and there it came. a yip in the distance, but still close enough that it rang out from the heart of the valley. bold. his head snapped in the direction of the sound, muscles coiling as a low growl rumbled in his chest; his large frame cutting through the underbrush with surprising stealth for a wolf of his size. coyote musk was pungent and unwelcome. the bitch was in heat, bound to lure in any bachelors seeking to claim her. he tracked her down to a narrow stretch of forest near the valley’s southern edge, where the trees grew dense and the shadows stretched long. she was digging at something, her narrow shoulders hunched and ears swiveling nervously. a pathetic creature, lean and mangy, with fur that hung in uneven patches.
tvar did not wait for her to notice him. he would not offer her that mercy. part of him felt a pang of regret, of... guilt, maybe; the lass was only minding her business, at the end of the day. but she chose the wrong fucking territory to make her den and raise her bastards. he surged forward, a growl tearing from his throat as he closed the distance in powerful strides. the coyote bolted, yelping in panic as she zigzagged through the trees. his jaws snapped inches from her tail as he lunged, forcing her to veer sharply to the left. she was clever, using the terrain to her advantage, darting between trees and ducking under low-hanging branches. but tvar was relentless, his breath steaming in the cold air as he pushed harder, each stride eating up the ground between them.
finally, she made a mistake. the coyote hesitated for a fraction of a second, her path blocked by a thick tangle of brambles. tvar seized the opportunity, leaping forward with a snarl. his jaws clamped down on her hind leg, dragging her down as she screamed and thrashed wildly. she twisted, snapping her teeth at him; yet her teeth did little to deter him. with a powerful jerk, he pulled her closer, his teeth shifting to clamp around her throat. the struggle was short-lived. her claws raked at his chest, but she lacked the strength to do any real damage. tvar’s jaws tightened, crushing her windpipe, and her movements slowed, then stopped altogether.
when she went limp, tvar dropped her lifeless body to the ground, his chest heaving as he caught his breath. he wasn't fond of what came next, but it was necessary. furthermore, it was temporary. gripping her by the neck, he dragged the body a short distance to an open patch of ground where he pinned her down with a massive paw, baring his teeth as he began the grisly task of removing her head. his powerful jaws worked to saw through flesh and sinew, the metallic taste of blood flooding his mouth. it was messy, brutal. disgusting. enough to make him wretch up his dinner from the night before.
with a sickening crack, the coyote’s head came free. tvar spat out a piece of fur, his breath coming in harsh bursts as he stepped back to survey his work. the body lay discarded, a lifeless shell, while her severed head rested in the dirt like a grotesque trophy. tvar picked it up carefully, gripping it by the scruff with his teeth.
