She wanted to tackle him. She almost did actually. She almost leaped up and knocked him to the ground and shoved his face in the dirt. She would've started screaming at him to say it, to just say what he meant to say for once instead of leaving her to read between the lines and to guess. She wanted to grab his ear in her teeth and rip it off of his stupid head until he told her that he loved her (cause that's how you do it, right?)
But, Fin did none of that. She sat still, frozen against him as he told her "congratulations" and "take care". The words were so hollow and somehow cold... It was like a knife being driven into her heart and twisted cruelly. "You too," she replied dully, turning away from him again to look away into the cold night, hoping that he'd leave. She just wanted him to leave and be done with it so that she could go curl up and cry herself to sleep.
Finley's wish didn't come true immediately, but soon enough she heard his footsteps retreating from her. It wasn't until they'd faded completely that she wandered off a few yards herself in the opposite direction, finally curling up on a patch of grass nearby Blue's den, safely away from any of her friends being able to see the silent tears that slipped down her cheeks until sleep took her away.
