Her chest began to burn, so Treepie slowed down and aimed for Glaukos. She rolled to a halt in front of him, aware of his assessing looks. Her muscles ticked, a physiological cue that she’d accomplished her warmup. She licked the foam coating her lips and waited to catch her breath. No sooner had that happened than he declared Pie ready to fight.

Her yellow eyes tracked him as he moved to the center of the clearing they—mostly he—had made. Glaukos laid down the terms of their sparring exercise. She swiveled as he spoke, squaring off with him from across the open space. He wanted her to try to hit him three times.

She didn’t move right away. He made for a very large target, yet he was certainly capable of deflecting any blows. Pie didn’t worry about harming him for that reason. She doubted she could hurt him even if she struck him with all her might. She also knew this was going to be much easier said than done.

Finally moving, Tiuttuk began to circle Glaukos, anticipating that he would likely pivot with her. He would see her coming, no matter what she did, so she just needed to go for it. But she continued walking around him for a moment, wondering if it might make him dizzy. She tried to look impassive, though there were probably a few tells when she finally broke the pattern and rushed to whack a paw at his ankles.
