Bushtit stood at the caldera’s foot, oblivious to the argument between mother and son taking place deep within the territory. He could see no movement on the mountainside from here; everything was very quiet and still. He knew he should call out to announce his presence so somebody could fetch him and take him to his mother—or bring Towhee to him—but he’d just spent the past two days moving almost nonstop over very rugged terrain, so he took a few moments to catch his breath.

His dark eyes wandered as he stood there, tired muscles ticking in the frosty air. His gaze swept from the woods off to his right, past the nearby slope and then eastward across the frozen plain there. He stared at the distant mesa, oblivious to its connection to his padre and Verapaz, before finally retraining his attention fully upon Redhawk Caldera.

He sucked in a breath, threw back his head and announced his arrival by way of a sonorous howl.
