The moment he set his separately colored eyes on the investigator, Quill knew instinctively that she wanted no trouble with this hyperpredator. Regardless of what his actual rank was, he was king on this stretch of beach, at this very second, and as made for strife as she was, the Eyjolfur had zero desire to challenge whatever it was this mechanical titan thought he had going on around here.

So she kept her tail low— worm-wriggling at its tip to express her interest— while turning her muzzle sideways to convey her simultaneous aversion to the danger he presented to her as a lone wolf. He came nearer, but she remained rooted to the spot, not yet stricken by an urge to flee from him, and careful still not to make a move forward, unless she was invited to do so.
