The likelihood of two wolves taking down a full-grown buck was slim, but it was spring, and they were both in good health and high spirits. They might find a tired doe to take down, or one of the slower children would become their target - either way, Firefly felt extremely confident that they'd find something. The graze lines flowed along the edge of the plateau where the trees were thin; the more he stalked the more clear they seemed, as well as the various other signs that deer had been through this way — droppings, gouges in the soil from bucks sparring perhaps, and the vague sense that they were being watched.

Then, he heard it. The sad little bleat of a fawn — somewhere over the edge that the two wolves were patrolling. Firefly glanced to Yami to make sure he wasn't hallucinating and went on to peer over the steep ledge; beneath him, sprawled awkwardly, was a small creature struggling to stay balanced, calling meekly for a mother that was gone.
