The man, or what could've been called a man at one time perhaps, moved with a skittering gait and reaching steps, climbing the hillside where the shadows touched the grass, and seeking the shelter of tree boughs in passing.

His tail was tucked neatly against his belly, and his ears - while tall and fanning - twitched up at every sound, or plastered back and down as if he were truly a rabbit in disguise, and running for his freedom. That was the truth of it! His eye was wide, and he saw much; but there came a descension of the earth quite suddenly, and his steps caught air!

Then he was falling, tumbling, hitting first a sapling growing from the edge of the cliff with one shoulder, which spun him! And down he went, a pile of limp meat with stick-legs curled like a swatted spider, until he came to a rest on another plateau. Up came his head, and hastily did he blink, then sit there with one eye open as a periscope might, to see through the settling dust.
