for @Petal <3
The fox's shrill cries were piercing to his ears, but Persia didn't loose his grasp on the scavenger's tail. Everyone made mistakes here and there; not everyone paid with their lives. Maybe the fox wouldn't, either. But he was pretty annoyed.
He yanked the creature back, releasing his grip as it went stumbling — then he seized it by the scruff, shaking it fiercely. Persia felt his heartbeat in his ears. For a moment he thought he might kill the fox, just to make a point to the rest of them.
Instead he dropped it, and watched it flee in a blur of red fur and redder blood and ragged squeals. That one, at least, wouldn't be back. Persia turned away, eager to get back to his meal.

she heard them.
squealing and screaming. she had occasionally taken it upon herself to watch these odd creatures and feel some strand of connection between them. she always thought that her and her sisters were a lot like them.
yet her whole body buzzed with anxiety to think that someone would hurt something she loved. again. how many times would that happen?
she wished, not for the first time, that she looked a bit…better. stronger.

why did you do it?she asked abruptly, figuring it must be him who had caused so much strife. she was hardly an image of protest though. small, wispy and blonde.

The next to bother him wasn't a fox at all. It was a little blonde wisp of a girl, not yet a yearling but perhaps close. Persia, who had just settled down to finish his hare, looked up with a huffed laugh.
He eyed the girl, wondering just how sheltered she was.
Because this -Persia gestured with his nose at the hare.
- is mine.

What would you have done?

maybe it was the display of wounding that left her so prickled. enough to develop a backbone all of a sudden.
even if she wandered, even if everyone roamed, there should always be a place to come back to.
if he cared more about wolves and vulpes.
left it alone.she said with a certainty.
this place is theirs.and maybe petal had started to understand the importance of having a place.

you're close to packs, too.

He rose lazily, taking a single step toward the girl.
If they can't defend it,Persia began in tones of idle disdain,
Then it isn't theirs. Foxes, wolves, any creature at all.
Haven't you learned that by now?He wondered aloud, another step bringing him closer.
Nothing is yours except what you can take. And if someone else can take it from you, it isn't yours. Not anymore. An essential lesson for any young wolf, though she was so terribly late in learning it.

of course she knew that.
it only seemed like no one else ever did. no one had ever understood except for her, her sisters and a wayward mother.
a nervous lick of her lips once.
then she decided to put his thinking on display. a mad dash was made for whatever was left of his hare. it mattered not if it was only skin and bones left even. there was use in those things.
if this worked, she might coast on a high never touched again.
if it didn't? reality just might crush her once and for all.
