It seemed somebody—but not just anybody—had gotten to their food before they had. Fox also caught the scent of their banished son (she hadn't disowned him, anyway), and a growl gurgled in the back of her throat. Ferret was a good-for-nothin' piece of garbage, and now she had half a mind to track him down and rip one of his ears off to teach him a lesson. But his scent didn't seem recent enough for them to have any chance of catching him, and besides... they had more important matters to attend to.

She returned her gaze to Peregrine, but his expression seemed... off. Like he wasn't quite there. "Don't worry about him, Perry," she said, attempting to talk him down and unaware that his murderous gaze was meant for her rather than Ferret. "He'll get what's coming to him." She hardly believed that, but it was her feeble attempt at a lie to get him to defocus on Ferret and refocus on her.
