dated for this morning

Maybe she was wrong--but today was the day. She felt it in her bones as she rose, the sun having broken over the horizon and filtering gently through the trees. Even as the day began, it seemed to be ending fast. Today was the day.

Lily left the willows and climbed the nearest isolated mountain, the perfect place to make her call. She hoped that it would ring out as well as she had planned. If not, she wondered if the others felt it too. This sensation deep within of a long and lonely night approaching.

But it wouldn't be lonely. They'd have each other, right?

After an arduous trek, Lily dragged herself to the summit--or as close as she could get--panting with exertion. She rested for a while, then lifted her head to the sky. The air was clear and thin up here, the clouds close enough to touch. She stared into the gray expanse for a long moment, and then howled, a reedy, high sound growing louder as it continued.

The call echoed through the valley, bouncing off rocks, rippling through the waters. And when it was finished, Lily knew it was all downhill from here--in a good way.

Yule is here. Come one, come all, come all who love to the willows.
