Out of Easthollow and into the wilderness, Piper trekked further than she had anticipated until she had passed the mountain range where she had once lived inside of Diaspora. She had thought to stop to see Stigmata, but she opted to do that on her way back instead of on her way out. The young Redleaf had done what she could to implement herself into the pack that her family had settled in. She had felt smothered by the number of bodies and the amount of change that had taken place since she had first said goodbye to her aunt and mother.

On her journey, Piper thought of Mona for the first time in a long time. She wondered how the fiery woman was doing – if she had found a place for herself – and whether or not they would ever run into each other again. There were many things about the valley that she missed. Things that were once simple had turned into chaos. It was a shame that she couldn’t go back.

Cool waters lapped at the shore of a large lake. Piper approached the edge and bent down to drink from the liquid, quenching her thirst from a lengthy travel. She glanced across the stretch of windswept basin water and breathed a soft sigh. Independent as she was, it was the first time that the young girl had realized that she was without any friends in her life. And for a brief moment, her heart was made heavy by this realization.
