he hadn't meant to leave, but then he did. if anyone asked about it, the water could be blamed—although who knew if there had been any witnesses to cam's impromptu float trip.

one minute, he was nosing around the edges of the whitefish river, close to a patch of grass that smelled strongly of the wolves he had met before. the next, he caught sight of a large piece of driftwood, bobbing along. large enough that when it meandered into the shallows, cam clambered down into the water and then aboard, clutching the slippery surface with ungainly paws.

even the rapids were no match for the h.m.s. enigma, which coursed through the pale spray with its captain aboard looking quite fearful, but determined nonetheless. they coasted through the gorge, cam caught between terror and glee, whipping around sharp curves and sailing over tiny waterfalls.

he eventually was booted off after plummeting down a rather steep waterfall (now that was the scariest thing he'd experienced, as his stomach dropped and the wind whistled past his face). but even that hellraising moment couldn't deter him from continuing on. his driftwood had survived the fall intact, and so aboard he climbed yet again, in much calmer waters now.

who knew where the glittering, rippling expanse ended and the dirt road began? cam soon lost track of time, and before he knew it, he was on his way to a new adventure, blissfully ignorant of any danger that may lie ahead. for once, he felt liberated. he felt free.
