For @Wayfarer

"Hey, wanna go on a patrol?" Veteran asked his sister, whispering so that only she could hear. If any of the other pups heard the word "patrol" they would all probably try to jump on board, and he kind of wanted to spend some time with just his sister. With mom gone again, he and Wayfarer had been grouped in with their half-siblings for going on two weeks now, and as social as Veteran was, even he had reached his limit for how much childish drama he could handle.

When the pair had broken free of the group, Veteran breathed a little easier. "When do you think mom will be back?" he asked her conversationally. Duskfire Glacier's eastern border was in eye shot now, and Veteran's glacial gaze tracked along the Permafrost Hollow's distant treeline.

A ruddy ear swivelled to catch her brother's hushed tones, and her snout followed. She blinked wordlessly into his dark face then eyed the other cubs, rooted for a short interval until she was sure that nobody had heard Veteran's suggestion. She wasn't particularly thrilled to have been abandoned with Tzila and her brats again, and an opportunity to escape was warmly welcomed.

Together Lane's duo slipped away, and Wayfarer trailed after the dark-furred Duskfire closely. Her mood had improved somewhat over the weeks since their mother left them behind, but she was still pretty sour about it - especially when she had to talk about it.

"Dunno," she rolled a shoulder and scoffed a breath, "hopefully never."

"After all we've been through, everything I've done,
it can't all be for nothing."

Never..?

"Whaddyou mean never?" Veteran asked, taken aback. He pulled his attention from the patrol to focus in on his sister's face. Her eyes were amber now, just like Mom's-- but it probably wasn't the best time to mention that.

"I know you're still mad at her, but it's better when mom's here. We've always said that." They had always agreed on everything, pretty much. Up until now.
