please don't eat me, not yet Dx

A small band of elk, mostly composed of cows and their calves, grazed peacefully on the Kintla flatlands. Though most bulls were solitary creatures, Rusty preferred to be in the company of others. Not only for practical reasons, like safety in numbers, but also because he was a friendly guy for a bull in his prime. He found the lonely life of a bachelor to be unbearably dull, and he enjoyed his conversations with the adult females and he relished being able to watch his offspring grow. The herd provided him with safety and comfort, and in return, he defended them when predators came calling.

As the others grazed or rested the bull stood watch over them like a sentinel, ready to sound the alarm should any danger appear.
