Before Teekon:

Vespa grew up in a small, family pack in the eastern woodlands of Saskatchewan Valley. Her life was relatively easygoing to begin with as prey was abundant and rival predators usually stuck to the northern ranges where the herds liked to rear their young. However, her laid-back life ended when she discovered her uncle had been killed. The Valley had always been a saught after territory which was defended well. Though, it just so happened that a stranger pack had arrived from the east and, by the aggression in their howls, wanted the Valley for themselves. They attacked late one night when the pack were resting, killing both alphas of Vespas pack in one, swift wave. There were also casualties for the stranger pack, their alpha male receiving life-threatening injuries. The Saska Valley Pack were overwhelmed by the strength and size of the strange pack and fled without being told twice, leaving the Valley for the rival pack to claim.

The remaining wolves of the Saska Valley Pack were forced into keeping a low profile as they trecked through their old territory. They began to starve, not wanting to risk alerting the rival pack of their presence by making a kill. Slowly, the pack began to disband, the wolves peeling off from the dishevelled group in search of new territories and more food. Vespa and her brother Hinto, who were by this time just under a year old and beginning to reach adulthood, continued to journey together. They managed to sustain themselves on rodents, small mammals and berries for the months that passed since the attack. However, an encounter with a short-tempered bear soon brought an end to the siblings company and, after receiving multiple wounds, Vespa abandoned her brother to continue her search for a safer territory.
