someone had come to her. they dragged her body further inland, keeping her from the cold licks of river water, and set her beside the base of a tree. moments were spent trying to rouse her from her sleep; it soon became evident that she was totally unconscious and unlikely to awake in her current state of being.

the apparition searched for something to warm her. the gutted corpse of a rabbit lay across her belly, protecting the apparent youth which rolled within. there were still some signs of life, although weak; when prodded, the pups shifted, indicating some chance of survival. a miracle, it must have been.

she was held tightly by the stranger's grip, their body wrapped around her own and breath working along her spine. a small cast made from chewed pine bark and mud had hardened around her presumably shattered paw in an effort to minimize damage for the foreseeable future. she would need to replace the cast eventually, but being unconscious, the stranger couldn't explain to her how it worked.

low murmurs escaped her mouth, growing louder to aggravated whines. the stranger hummed a lullaby, hoping to quiet her anxiety. wake up, they whispered, it's okay. she slowly opened her eyes, though her vision remained blurry. the strain on her muscles brought tears to her eyes, obscuring the strange world around them. the stranger knelt down and licked away the pools, as a mother might their child.

a howl sounded over the wilds. the apparition knew not who it was for, but heard the song's offering. someone else was hear to care for this woman, whoever she might have been. the stranger stood, lifting the pelt which they had been lying on to settle atop the woman's shoulders. then, they disappeared, leaving only their faint scent.
