set for tonight
It had been a month of unseasonable rain, and it showed no signs of stopping. More was on the way now, brought to the taiga by massive thunderhead clouds. Lightning crackled in their depths, lighting the sky ever-so-briefly before the darkness swallowed it up. And it only grew darker.
One bolt escaped. It struck downward, a bright and jagged scar over the plains, and struck one of the few trees that dotted the otherwise-barren landscape. A boom of thunder followed its descent—and as if on cue, the tree burst into flames.
A torch, reaching for the hidden stars. It burned bright, illuminating the hills in flickering orange-gold light. And though the coming deluge would eventually extinguish it, the tree burned long enough for those even miles away to see.
Danger, or at least the chance of it. These plains had burned once before; without the rain, they might well have done so again this night.
