the ulaq had never felt any colder than when brave one steps inside.

she was gone. aaka's scent ran faint. the only things left of her were stray pale tufts of fur and half-completed amulets.
perhap's he'd been bad, too hard that it made her drift away like her namesake. he slumps in the middle of the ulaq, unsure where to go next — should he tell someone? say that his mother had gone missing, like his father had? he rubs an ankle against his eyes something pricks them. 

sniffling and swallowing, the boy takes one of the incomplete amulets with him to leave the ulaq, and retraced his steps. he'd been avoiding the ulaq too, since that day. he'd found a more comfortable place to sleep within.

shells line the entrance to home. he follows them, as he always had. dirty and abandoned, but there was a warmth to it that comforted the boy even when he returns alone. brave one drops the amulet and gets to work.
