All Welcome
never was khaemwaset far from his sisters, or den for that matter. doggedly he followed, refusing to be parted; they took place in markets, in small forays, in little hunts — all as one.

and one they may well be alone, if father and mother did not return.

war was an amorphous concept, something grand and dangerous very far away. something to be attended by the divine royalty of his life, and something which might one day fall to him.

as night fell, khaemwaset inhaled winter in the nighttime air, sitting still and tall as if he might be in part carved from jet.

The jovial nature of their arrival had dispersed with the head of the royal family—Toula and Rashepses absence was felt among their people, surely, but it was the children who had grown all the more sullen.

Nasima kept careful watch upon them—and as night fell, and Khaemwaset’s own inky tones blended with the shadowed sky, the governess swept up to his right side, remaining a small distance as she settled herself down, pale blue eyes cast to upward.

“Is the night not beautiful, Amiir?”

"it would be more beautiful were i enjoying it from the banks of the serpent," khaemwaset gave back to the servant most unfortunately attendant upon him this bitter hour.

"i suppose you miss my father," the prince offered lightly, casually; he tested her with no knowledge beyond how he had seen his father regard beauty in many things.

the loveliness of a gemstone received rashepses' great adulation, and as nasima was pretty in a different way, khaemwaset had come to wonder.

his goldminted eyes found her own and held them demandingly.
