That's when Fox began to speak to the gathered group, redirecting the child's attention. She forgot about Elwood and Finley, as well as Sebastian, as she listened to her dam's message. Wildfire did her best to follow along, though terms like offensive and defensive were concepts she didn't understand fully. The young Naturalist chewed on her lower lip, shooting her mother a questioning look. She didn't want to ask outright, since it might be a stupid or silly question.

Perhaps the words that sank in the most deeply were, "Failure to comply is not an option." Wildfire shot her brother and sister an anxious glance. Did they understand what mama meant? She badly wanted to do what was asked of her, especially if she couldn't stay here if not. She just didn't quite get what that entailed and it made her stomach start tying itself into nervous knots.
