Hearing Thuringwethil lay it out like that—refuting that she was the Alpha, verbatim—did not settle well with Wildfire. It went against her most deeply ingrained, wildest instincts. She didn't dare mention this aloud, though, and who was she to argue for orthodoxy when her own relationship was anything but traditional? Still, she felt suddenly very discomfited. She felt like she didn't properly understand the culture, even after all this time and immersion. The commander's next few words didn't do anything to reassure her.
Wildfire experienced a flare of indignation. Why had Thuringwethil taken her as her mate when she still wasn't entirely comfortable with it? Why were they pursuing children if this was how the Heda truly felt? The Bandrona felt a little sick. She pressed her tongue to the roof of her mouth not only to stave off the sudden nausea but to prevent herself from voicing any of these thoughts aloud. What if she spoke up and Thuringwethil broke it off with her? That would be horribly painful by itself but then her dreams of children would be dead in the water too.
Still, despite herself, she couldn't help but ask. She managed to at least reign in her emotions enough to keep her voice calm and steady, although her heart and stomach both flip-flopped in fear of the honest answer she might receive. "But do you want this? Me? Children?" She swallowed thickly. "Even though we could be 'weapons for an enemy'...?"
