She winced, hissing through her teeth, when Rebekka prodded her again. "Don't—" she begged, too faintly to be heard as the shock settled into her system. Wildfire's body flushed cold, then hot, then cold again. Her pupils blew, the black overtaking the warm amber of her irises, and she began sucking in rapid, shallow pants. Her tongue dangled from the side of her mouth as her head lolled, cheek pressed to the cold dirt. Suddenly everything felt so heavy, as if gravity had doubled or even tripled.

Strangely, the Bandrona managed to hang onto consciousness through this bout. Her ears rang with her pack mate's distressed cries. She could not move or speak at the moment, though her overblown eyes rolled toward the dark sky, searching for the reassurance of Rebekka's face.
