They weren't supposed to go to the outskirts of the pack, but Anansi's respect for authority was a terribly fickle thing. Sometimes he was unfailingly obedient and others he was downright anarchic, and it was impossible to tell which way he leaned at any given moment. He'd avoided the willow since Maegi found him there, for surely she would be keeping a more vigilant eye on it, but that meant she wouldn't be watching the borders as readily. Curiosity got the better of him, as it often did, so as soon as he left Wolfskull for the day, he headed directly for them.

He subconsciously latched onto a scent along the way, so when he arrived, it was fortuitously close to where Jakoul was busy intercepting an outsider. It took him longer than it should have to notice the two dark-haired she-wolves between the trees and he wasn't making much of an effort to be quiet; by the time he caught sight of them and pressed himself low to the ground, it was almost guaranteed one of them had noticed him, if not both.
