a chuckle rose from the base of their chest and into their throat. the roar of the water over their ears drowned out the sound. was he thinking the same thing they had? how easy it would be to bleed the life away?

the teeth around their throat released. derg pulled away. they lifted their head to his spluttering and coughing; he staggered through the water, and the minute their eyes met he turned and ran.

snorting water, renard rolled to their feet and onto the bank. they watched only long enough, smile bright with teeth, to see him round the canyon wall and vanish from sight; then, shaking the water from their fur, they turned the other way. satisfied.

his loyalty to donovan was a shame. otherwise he might have offered an option.
