Nantahala stood a little taller once she was complimented, and her expression grew brighter, too. While any compliment would have this effect on her, she knew that there was something special about the woman before her—it was as though her words held more authority and weight than the others; Toula was like Kukutux in this way.

As the attendant draped the fur around the woman’s neck, Nantahala watched in awe. She noticed how the pale fur brought out the turquoise of the Pharaoh’s eyes, and she swam in those pools for a moment as she admired both her work and the wearer of it. It looks perfect, she breathed with a wag of her tail. You look very pretty!

When asked about the gathering, she nodded. Yes! It’s so exciting, isn’t it?? she marveled, her gaze sweeping to take in the surroundings—the bustling crowds, the strangers mingling as Nantahala and Toula did.

Are you going to be hunting, too?? she asked next, her voice an excited hitch as she imagined the powerful woman hunting alongside her. This is my first time hunting! I’m really, really, REALLY excited about it—I’ve never gotten to hunt anything this big before. At home they just let me hunt the smaller things!!!
