He stayed as long as he could—much, much longer than he ever would’ve anticipated. She kept breathing, day after night after day. But eventually, Cambria couldn’t bear it any longer. He was hungry, thirsty and forever altered.

Unaware of the proverbial phoenixes rising from the ashes, Cambria stalked away only moments before their emergence. Wyvern tried to alert him from where she perched on the cliffs. But he merely thought she was scolding him. He tuned her out—tuned out everything—and walked away.
