Chaudry had no issue lying to his packmates about the situation, but something about telling this woman what he had told them would be embarassasing. How could it not be? He had gotten a packmate pregnant, and then she ran off with all but his daughter. It was already regarded as strange by his packmates, and surely a stranger would feel the same way.
