The little girl was asleep next to her siblings, nestled in close to mom. She was dreaming, but like all thoughts of her first few months, the dream would not stick in her mind for long. There was nothingness in her dream. Not the ominous nothingness one might expect from a frightened child, but the ethereal kind; the weightlessness, the detatchment, a sense of roaming softness — all of which was cut short when the sound of a gurgling stomach came bursting through the serenity of the moment. Eimear woke with a start because of that noise, the strange cacophony that pealed out of Kaskara's belly and indicated her own hunger. 

Eimear mumbled something—empty sounds, a mix of gurgles and whines—and shifted away from the sound, pushing with her little paws as if that would save her from it. She managed to upright herself, uproot rather, and flop useless and off-balance upon her siblings. With their movements she was properly brought to the waking world, and then she rolled off of them, landing on her tiny bean paws, which she used to march away from the warmth of the body pile; she marched as well as a babe her size could, with legs that didn't quite listen to the impulses in her brain. All the while she was murmuring noises to herself like a crotchety old woman.
