Eske notices the twitch of The Commander’s ear and the tension filled silence that has come between them and she realizes now her error. Still, brought by Guardians or not Julep is still an outsider and to Eske she will have to prove herself like any other, whether their culture dictates it or not. Eske will not bow and scrape to a whelp (especially an outsider) simply because “Guardians” have brought her to Drageda. She had to earn her way, her place here and she was among the first children to be born to Drageda: so why should anyone else be treated any different, she cannot help but think. Hard work and perseverance are what Eske acknowledges not entitlement that is not even earned. She trusts Heda, and she does not think potential treasonous things because she seeks to rebel (she does not). She just struggles as she always has, to put her trust without it first being earned in an outsider; of whom she’s always been hostile towards. Kendra, perhaps, was one of the few exceptions, Wildfire and Dio included for they were already here when she was born. Gyda, too, she supposes but she was her mother and a different story entirely. Mother or not, Gyda always remained an outlier though, an outsider. “Heda.” Eske speaks in farewell as she bows her head in submission and ventures a different way than The Commander to finish her patrols knowing that if The Commander needs her she will call.
