The cat had one goal in mind which made his eastward travel make sense - and that was to reach the land of his forefathers, the expanse known to so many of his people as sacred; to the wolves of the valley it was merely another spit of land, somewhere they must be extra vigilant in case the namesake creatures came lurking. For Zugzwang, it was so much more. He plotted his course with stealth in mind as his fresh wounds began to stitch themselves back together, all the while contemplating the chances of finding a female upon the slopes. He wondered too if there would be other men, beasts like him to beat down. He was not at his full potential and that irked him but it would not matter in the end, because the feline was soon waylayed by the scent of wolf.

To find wolves here, of all places, should not have surprised him. Perhaps his rage was already ignited after his previous encounter with their type; perhaps it was his building horomones that made him more volatile, but either way, the scent offended him. It took him away from the thoughts of the battles he was trying to prepare for, and the prize - the women he would hoard for himself.

The forest loomed on the horizon, much like the last one he'd found. This time he was more determined to drive away the wolf that invaded his space, and dove in to the shadows with as much fervor as one might expect a man at war. He crept with all the subtlety of his species but each step was heavy, each sound bringing a turn of his head or a sharp glare from his eye; then, separating from the shadows of the wood, he spotted the dark shape. Zugzwang did not make a sound (but oh, how he wanted to scream) and he launched himself in to a run, slipping along familiar paths until he was standing exposed on a ledge above the smaller creature.

From there he could stare her down - this mongrel, this invasive pest of a bitch - and he sprang forth from the ledge, aiming to pounce and draw his reaching claws across her supple flesh.
