Heron Lake Plateau la giocanda

Mindless wandering has taken him up the gentle slopes of a plateau. Atop it was a lake that seemed to reach out and touch the horizon. Once teeming with life (though he himself could never and perhaps would never know), now the plateau was nearly empty.
There was no one but a stilt-legged flock of birds to keep him company. He quietly observed them picking about through the water from the safety of the bank.
