once they began to run, they could not stop.
it was not the mazoi that made them do it, it was not the way pharaoh looked to his pitiful queen, it was not the bruise to her breastbone — no reason brought this one in to the wind, except the need to breathe living air and feel freedom, at long last.
the woods; they were snow-thick and silent.
and when they were at once surrounded by the naked palms of ancient trees, the coyote brayed the call of their kind, and let it carry to a scream.

Happily one with his snowy surroundings, the quiet man trekked through the wood with haste. He felt it necessary to hunt for himself today, not wanting to lose his edge having Sayf bring him all of his meals. Sakai relished in the winds tousling his hair, teasing him with light touch.
The forest seemed barren, but the hunter knew better than to take what was in plain sight as the whole truth. The pale wolf pushed his snout to the soft snow on the ground, tunneling his maw into the freezing water in hopes of picking up an old trail. There was nothing there and so he pressed on.
A shrill scream cut the silence bringing the warrior to bare his teeth in a knee jerk reaction, tucking hind quarters to the ground and giving his surroundings a quick 360.
The echoes of the scream still carried and were easy to follow, so he did. As his gait slowed to arrive at the source of the call, Sakai was met with one of his own. Still with tightness in his chest, as dread was slow to leave his body, Kai called out softly. "Jawahir?"
