DAD, LOOK!

Pheiros bounded down the beach, ears flopping with each running step. He was zeroed in on another one of those smooth rocks, only this one was way bigger. As he got closer, he realized that it could also move. The rock quickly scurried away from him, and he chased after it, going as fast as his little golden paws would allow. Eventually, he caught back up with it, and it turned on him, charging across the sand at his face to the golden pup's complete delight. Pheiros fell into a play bow and released a tiny yip as he waited for his new toy to come play with him. It had large paw things on it's front legs that made a little snapping noise everytime they closed, and he couldn't wait the chew on them.

he'd never imagined himself as a father, let alone a single father — yet now, trotting across the sands after his son as he pursues a crab, he can't imagine any other life for himself. ears pulled forward, he chuffs a soft warning to pheiros as he follows, knowing the golden child's curiosity could be met with an unpleasant surprise. but he doesn't want to discourage the boy, so he refrains from simply snatching the creature away and turning it into lunch. instead, he draws up beside him with another chuff, casting him a look that says be careful. a small amount of tension lingers in his limbs, a readiness to seize the creature should it somehow pose a real threat to his only remaining child — but for now, he'll let pheiros make his own discoveries.

Pheiros paused at the warning chuff, sitting up and turning to look at his dad with a curious tilt of his head. He wondered why he needed to be cautious of a toy; it didn't look scary at all, smaller than even himself. He sniffed at the rock, glancing back at his father just in time to catch his warning look. Turning back to his new toy, he fell into a play bow, releasing another playful yip before launching himself forward, sights set on the snapping thing.

He didn't have a chance to sink his teeth into anything, though, because just as he opened his mouth to reach for his target, it snapped closed around his lip. For a few seconds, he was stunned, and then pain shot through the soft, sensitive skin in the creatures hold. Pheiros cried out and struggled to get free, falling to the ground and pushing at the rock with his back feet. Thankfully, it freed him then, and he bounded back to his dad, eyes wide, and hid between his front legs, angry gaze falling on the rock as it began to scurry away.
