The youngster blinked up at it with black eyes, familiarity registering faintly, then spotted Avery moving toward the wolf who seemed all head and no body.

It wasn't competition that compelled her forward, simply intrigue. The smaller puppy wanted to investigate too. As she tottered closer to the looming head, she drew in the scent of freshly slain beaver, though she didn't know it for that.
