Without thinking, Sugar dropped and darted at a perpendicular angle to the stag's trajectory, unwittingly putting herself directly in Bronco's path. She never saw him coming. His forelegs crashed into her flank, the force of impact shoving her ruthlessly to the forest floor. She didn't just drop, she rolled once and ended up landing roughly on her other side, blinking in shock.

A heartbeat later, she darted back to her feet, ignoring the pain in her ribs. Her eyes swept the nearby forest and saw the elk retreating into the trees, shaking his head and snorting as he went. Sugar exhaled shakily and then her brow furrowed as she turned to see who had run into her.
