How long had he been staring at the water? he wasn't sure. But now he could barely think. There were so many voices in his head, telling him so many things that he could barely make out any actual words.

But one voice sang loudly over the noise, it's words crisp and clear. They told him to just end it all. Now that the gates had been open, it would be too difficult to to close them again. He had no choice but to do as the voice commanded.

No. No. He stood up. Shut up. Shut up. SHUT UP! he screamed the words into the dark nothingness around him. His chest heaved—it hurt inside. The shame was too painful; it stabbed his heart and lungs over and over. It tingled down his arms and into his paws.

He fell to the ground, sobbing. He lay there, his body shaking with the crying he couldn't stop. He repeated awful things to himself over and over, the voices all melting together into one vicious entity.

And then there was nothing. No voices. No feelings. No tears. He was blissfully numb now. This one could take care of the mess. He sat up, his face blank, his eyes unseeing and empty. His breathing slowed, and his heart stopped racing. Slowly, methodically, he reached down and tore a chunk of flesh from one shoulder and then the other. Blood dripped from each wound, but still he felt nothing. It needed to be that way.

He slumped to the ground, his eyes closing as his mind was consumed by darkness. When he woke in the late morning, he would be Sayf again. His memory of what happened would be gone. He would be Sayf again.
