Bracken shoots from the soil where Erzulie lays; the hemlocks hug her forevermore. Coraline sits tall at her side, eyes reddened and cheeks damp.
She isn't quite sure how long she's been sitting here. An hour or so, perhaps; not that it mattered. Not that it would ever be enough.
She hadn't been there. She hadn't been able to stop what happened to her family; her cliffs, her brother, her mothers. She remembers fondly the soft proclaimation of Mireille that she had not been blamed. But even still, the feeling slams her throat, stifles her breathing — guilt.
And what was the purpose of it all? Her own pettiness, her selfish resentment? There was nowhere for such anguish to go now. All that remains is the clump of dirt, the graves now coated with the beginnings of sea-earth taking back what it gave.
And she weeps again.
