Eventually, they dragged Sam back into the forest. There was not much to do but stash him safely and hope that he would wake up – or become the fledgling pack'a first burial. They were bonded now, whatever the case, by his imminent death or miraculous survival.

When he woke up, Sam would be grateful for the soft bed of moss and the fact that they had kept him hydrated as best they could between seizures, episodes of manic cackling, and long, deep sleeps.

He would wake up. But he would not be the same.
