The forest was quiet.
Sam had been too focused on his mission to allow guilt into the light. Now it walked beside him as he made his way through the mishmash of ancient giants and virulent young evergreens, nose hunting for any trace of @Visala.
He could have called out - should have, but fear of being met with silence stole his voice. There were whiffs of Solenya and Kirain. Scattered, and faint. He was all but sure they had been taken - or, ideally, enticed to build a home in some other, less forested part of the world. He doubted it; they had both seemed quite keen on the sanctum and would not have left their friends behind. Ergo: taken.
Sam stopped in a large patch of ferns and drew a shuddering breath. The many-fingered leaves shivered when he let it go. What now?

Her worry for Sam had only increased as of late. He seemed erratic, and as much as she tried to encourage him to remain in the den she and Kirain had dug out he always seemed to wander off. It was impossible not to feel discouraged.
Today she had decided to make an attempt at pushing her worries aside and rest; stretched out over a rock with gentle breaths coming and going, eyes shut and tension released from her limbs. There wasn't much else to do today, the forest was remarkably quiet and Ghost wasn't keen on eating anymore mushrooms with Sam.

He found her eventually, resting on the least comfortable surface available in the entire forest. Sam liked a good patch of moss, or even a flattened nest of ferns. Oh – or that tangle of roots near that one tree that felt like being cradled by an old god. Strange, how the forest had become home despite being a hotbed of supernatural danger.
Sam shuffled closer. If she could hear him, she pretended not to. What a strange-looking wolf she was, Sam thought, watching his friend's side rise and fall. Had she ever seen herself? Or been given a description? Sam did not know if she had ever been able to see. Didn’t even know her real name, come to think of it.
With so much of his brain occupied by thoughts, there was not enough processing power left to keep the farts in check. Before he could make a decision either way, his rear released a long, squeaky toot.
It set the tone for the winter months, which Sam and Ghost would spend huddled together in the dark forest.
