There was part of Wildfire that wanted to find somewhere quiet and wallow a while, especially as the weather turned cool and dreary. Instead, she decided to thrust herself right into life as a new member of Moonspear. If she stayed busy (and distracted), she wouldn't be able to dwell on everything she had lost. Perhaps she could outrun the little black cloud trying to loom over her. Besides, it would make a good impression on both her new leaders and pack mates if she started contributing right away.
She would have liked for Floki to come with her but she knew it would set a precedent if he went everywhere with her. She was a strong, independent young woman, she reminded herself. She bade her companion goodbye and picked her way downward, toward the thick woodland on Moonspear's lower slopes. It started to drizzle even as she slipped beneath the treetops.
Something caught her attention through the gloom. Her amber eyes were drawn to a pale, cream-colored figure stalking through the underbrush. Wildfire watched him a moment, black tail flicking, then decided to move toward him and introduce herself. As she padded closer, she woofed to announce her presence. Simultaneously, she noticed his stump.
"Atreyu?" she guessed, stopping perhaps five feet from him, her body language friendly and respectful as she lowered her gaze and wiggled the tip of her limp tail.
