He hadn't thought as to where they were, but when she said it, realization dawned upon him.  He could not understand how she felt, nor would he ever be able to - obviously it was an experience he would never need to go through.  And he had no idea what to say in response... as happened often, nowadays.  He sometimes wondered if he shouldn't shed his title of counselor for another more suited to him.  He hadn't given adequate counsel in a long while.

He did take her friendly wave as an indication it was ok to move a bit closer, It had been so soon after that the fire sprang up, he hadn't really known how the loss had affected her.  And he hadn't needed to wonder, after she disappeared.  He'd all but forgotten them.

"How are you?" It wasn't a particularly insightful question to ask, but it was the only one that came to mind. He couldn't comprehend what was going on in her mind right now, both with this past loss and her more recent return. So it was the best he could do. Then it was his turn to look down. "I'm glad you're back. That you found your way home. I realized I didn't say that, the other day."
