Lecter's threat did not phase the yearling. Maybe he was just taunting her, but due to the girl's trespassing, Fox would not have made a fuss if he truly did intend to "paint the wood with [her] blood." Death was fine punishment for trespassing, especially when one trespassed to steal food from their home. Bazi's soft question was met with a slow shake of Fox's head. There was nothing to be done except to watch the events unfold. Fox would intervene only if it looked as if Lecter was in trouble.

The outsider apologized, admitting that she would have simply taken the vole and left, provided she had been able to catch it. This, of course, was not to Fox's liking at all, but she allowed Lecter to act as he pleased. She imagined that he would dislike her response, but that was up to him. The sneer on the outsider would likely not do her well in the long run.
