Suddenly he was darting out of reach, playfully taunting her about rotten eggs. "You're on!" she shouted after him, laughing as she dug her heels into the ground and sprang after him. For several minutes, she chased him through the woods before suddenly remembering herself. She was supposed to be pursuing squirrels, not Floki. She grinned, shaking her head as she let him slip away into the trees in pursuit of his own bushy-tailed rodent. She then braked to a stop to focus for a moment.
Wildfire drew in a breath, sifting through the scents on the air. She then dropped her nose, combing through those closer to the ground. She located a promising trail and began to wind through the woodland, nose skimming just inches above the cold, damp substrate. The scent led her to the foot of a perfect, stately elm. She paused near its roots, golden eyes lifting to the limbs. She didn't see the squirrel but if it was up there, it was well out of reach anyway.
She abandoned that lead, then went roving for another. It didn't take long to strike another trail, this one causing her to double back the way she had come. Wildfire pried her way through a thicket, leaped over a fallen log and spotted the squirrel just on the other side, sitting on its haunches in the dead center of a small clearing. There was a half-eaten acorn in its little hands, though it dropped it and darted away immediately when the she-wolf appeared.
With a low snarl in her throat, Wildfire leaped after it. But there were too many trees nearby and the squirrel quite easily bounded from the ground to a spot about four or five feet up the trunk of another elm tree, then scurried upward out of reach. Wildfire stopped at the tree's base, staring after it, ears pressing backward when the rodent sought the lowest limb, tucked itself into the joint and began scolding her loudly.
