With the world laid to waste and food already growing scarcer, Wildfire's interest in exploring ceased almost entirely. In its place, a more pressing drive arose within the young hunter. From dawn until dusk, she used all her energy to track prey. If this happened to lead her away from the territory, it was mere coincidence. Actually, it was more than that: the sparseness of even small game forced her to range further and wider, scouring every inch of dead earth for any sign of something to eat.
Today's hunting grounds included the formerly thick woodland due north of Sleeping Dragon. Wildfire roamed restlessly between the naked trees, nose to the grindstone. She managed to flush out a young hare, though it gave her the slip and disappeared into a muddy burrow. Normally, the she-wolf wouldn't have bothered, but she couldn't give up so easily now. She dug at the yielding soil until she was filthy with it, yet still had nothing to show for her efforts.
Wearily, she slumped against a nearby log and sighed. She had really wanted that rabbit, not for herself but to take back to the Heda. Surely the Alpha female could look after and feed herself, yet Wildfire couldn't resist the urge to bring her food any more than she could explain her attachment to Thuringwethil. So she didn't dwell on it, only acted on her impulses.
A slight May breeze picked up as she rested, carrying with it the scent of a wolf close by. It was masculine. Wildfire tensed ever so slightly, rising onto her filthy feet and deliberating a few moments before deciding to track the scent. It was good practice, if nothing else, and she couldn't lie that a wolf this far north of the Teekon Wilds piqued her curiosity.
