his body sang the tones of alarm, and vuk hid the sudden mad smile that leapt to her lips. how could he fear her, this scarred, small wolfess? perhaps she was more fearsome than she had suspected. vuk watched the guard hairs along his spine first leap, then settle, and it was then she noticed his shortened tail. sensing her advantage here, the girl nevertheless kept her own plume lowered, swaying it in a placating way behind her thinned hips. 

the man spoke, his voice a roll of thunder, and vuk blinked. it seemed she would have to speak after all. "hello," came her own tones, thick with an unplaceable accent and cracked from disuse. her eyes lowered in a brief shame, ears folding back against her small skull, but in the next moment she had lifted her gaze to ponder the brute.

it was upon the tip of her tongue to ask if he had seen seff, but vuk did not speak -- not yet.
