too much is happening for her to be aware of any of it, singularly focused on the taste of fur and flesh in her mouth. her triumph does not last for long. there is movement she does not pay enough attention to and then she is caught in the beast's mighty blow, feeling claws like daggers impale her and then she is flying, flying, not even enough time to process the abrupt change in her fortune before she's slammed against the earth some distance away, the forceful blow landing her against a sandy outcrop, her world snapping to black.
and there's nobody there to catch us when we fall
